Week Two Photos
I am a little behind on posting the latest photos. This set is from our second week where we worked on messenger bags and wristlets. Here are the results of all our hard work:
M Avery Designs Running Team… Well, sort of….
Come on out and support two of Hoboken’s most important charities, the Hoboken Boys and Girls Club and Jubilee Center.
This coming Tuesday, July 14th, The M Avery Designs Team will be running (okay, probably jogging/walking) in the Party With Purpose 5th Annual 5k and Kids’ Fun Run along the majestic Hoboken waterfront.
You won’t be able to miss us! Look out for the group running in these cute stripey tank tops promoting our Fashion Lab 5-Week Sewing Boot Camp that starts on September 8th!
Reversible, Super Comfy Skirts are Here
We are branching out and expanding our options with clothing now! But not just any clothing!
There has to be something completely unique about any clothing we are going to offer and with these skirts, that certainly is the case!
Not only are the reversible skirts, yep, you guessed it, REVERSIBLE, they are just about the most comfy skirt you will where this summer!
The top part/waist band of the skirt is made of organic stretchy jersey knit so it’s super soft and oh so comfortable on your belly & hips. The double layer of fabric, also helps to smooth out any bumps you may have in that area (holla!)
The skirt part is made of either cotton or rayon fabric that keeps it light, cool & casual, but substantial enough, that with the right job (of course) you could wear these cuties to work. And Bike riding is a cinch in these skirts (yes, of course I have already tried!) Heck, if you could do yoga in a skirt, these would be the skirt to do it in!
As with everything we offer, you can choose from an assortment of readymade skirts that are here in the store and ready to ship. Or if you would rather choose your own adventure, you can choose from an assortment of solid colored organic cotton jersey swatches for the top, and then of course choose from our vast fabric assortment in the fabric palette for your lower, skirt portions. Your skirt is then made for you and shipped within two weeks of your order date.
Seriously, all you need is one skirt and you have two completely different looks that you can wear twice as long without people wondering if you ever do laundry ; ) LOVE THAT!
Oooh, and did I mention how afforable they are? Just $32 for the readymade skirts and $38 to design your own. Come on, it doesn’t get much better than that!
Day Three & Four – Everybody seems to be getting the hang of this sewing thing…
Here are the latest photos from the Fashion Lab Summer Camp. We are well into week two now and the kids really seem to be getting the hang of the sewing thing. THey are loving all the cool projects they have been making, so I just wanted to add the latest pics from class. Some are “Work in progress” shots and some are great posed pictures of the proud students and their hard work.
If this looks like something you, or someone you know, would be into there is still some room in our second session starting on July 27th. Sign up soon, cause we are almost full. Here is the info.

Pin Cushion Project
Every stitcher should have their own pin cushion, in which to put all their straight pins, right?
Right! Well, if you are new to sewing and don’t have one yet, here is a step by step on how to make your very own adorable pin cusion! This is a great kids sewing project!
Start by cutting out two 6″ squares of some really cute fabric.
Place both pieces together, with right sides touching and stitch (using 1/2″ seam allowance) along three of the four sides. Should look something like this:
And here is a closeup of the stitching:
Next, turn the fabric right sides out and stuff with pillow fill. It should now look like this:
Now turn the raw edge over, tucking in about 1/2″ and secure in place with straight pins. Should look like this:
Now, sew this last side either with a machine (using 1/2″ seam allowance) or by hand, like in this photo. As you will see, you can sew it as neatly, as you would like. We like to do a nice big, messy handstitch, giving it that organic, home-made feel ; )
Voila! The perfect beginner sewing project that I guarantee any stitcher will use for years to come!
Our Fourth Meet Up – Hostess Apron Project
What a great Meet Up we just had! Sorry, if you missed it, but we all had a great time stitching our adorable hostess aprons!
With a total of four Meetups under our belt, our group just keeps getting bigger and our Meetups just keep getting better! For this one, we stayed local and sewed together at the M Avery Designs Studio/Boutique and snacked on munchkins from DD.
Take a look at the photos from the process, as well as some of the finished aprons! Every single one came out amazing and members were proudly wearing their new cute aprons out the door when they left!

Katie & Eliza Sewing Challenge
Okay, so I need to learn that you can’t make the camera vertical when you are filming video. Either way, it’s a cool video to check out Katie & Eliza’s (both Fashion Lab After School 2009 Alum) sewing skills:
Take a look at Nicole’s & Hannah’s Sewing Skills
I must say, I am kind of impressed with Nicole’s proficiency on the sewing machine. Here is video of her trying out the “hard” practice card:
